Credit:2
Course Introduction:
This graduate-level course (for master’s and doctoral students) introduces multiple research entry points in architectural studies, establishing concrete connections between sociocultural theories and material architectural spaces. It aims to reconstruct rich social life contexts and expand new research horizons.
The core framework of this course applies social theories and cultural studies to investigate micro-scale material architectural spaces, revealing the dynamic interplay between micro-architecture and macro-society while excavating the resistance mechanisms and unique values embedded in material architectures.
Key topics include: Architecture as Social Institutions, Prisons and Micro-Spaces, Wartime Architectures, Architectural Media and Mediation, Landscape Openness, Everyday Life and Design Practices, Painting and Art-viewing Communities, among others.
The primary objective is to cultivate students’ methodological awareness, abstract thinking, and acute observational skills, providing conceptual frameworks and analytical approaches for both design practices and academic research.
